Autumn 1995, Berlin, 17 people founded "C-base" a creative space which started as a technology hub. It grew into the biggest creative space/hacker space in the world. Cairo, post january 25th, There is a need for collaboration and social movement, a need for change that can only come from organized action. The only way to become organized and form partnerships/collaborate for different projects whether political, social or technological is through discussion and social networking. Egypts online community has already begun to mobilize thanks to @alaa through a series of discussions or "tweetnadwa's" which encourage healthy discussion on different preset issues and provides an excellent opportunity for people within this community to socialize and collaborate for different projects and action. These people would also participate in discussion and idea sharing which would automatically invoke self development. This suggestion could take this a step further. Our own "C-base" in downtown cairo. a self sustainable hub open 24 hours a day 7 days a week for the creative passion filled people who are trying to improve the community. Its "open source" ideas, a place where the communication and collaboration is encouraged and helped by others in an organized fashion. A workshop in kasr el nil street costs 1800L.E monthly to rent. an apartment 4000-6000L.E if fifty founding members collaborated to pay 200L.E each that would give us a start up of 10,000L.E which should be more than enough to start up the space. 100 L.E monthly fee would be more than enough to maintain and grow our space, given that 50 paying members are dedicated to make this work. Initial member list... (we need 50 to make this work) 1 hussein 2 Sheshtawy 3 Maram 4 Tawakol 5 Masouny 6 Mostafa 7 Bedeir 8 Khaled Abol Naga 9 Fawaz 10 Mahmoud Salem aka Sandmonkey 11 Ahmed Hesham 12 Ganzeer 13 Nancy Messieh 14 Sherif Fadel Fahmy 15 Nada Wassef 16 Mariam 17 Yahia 18 Salma (donating time to decorate and furnish) 19 Mazen 20 Muhammed Hegab 21 Eyad (volunteered to make a professional website and online advertising campaign) 22 Amina 23 Sherif Nour 24 Amal 25 Ahmed Nazmi 26 Mohamed Taymour 27 Hagar 28 Marwa 29 Ulrike 30 Mostafa 31 Radwa 32 Sonia 33 Amira 34 Beeso 35 Noushka 36 Dalia 37 Selim (not on twitter, here is his fb) 38 Mayar 39 Helen 40 Kareem (not on twitter, here is his fb) 41 Kanafaa 41 down 9 to go! if you would like to become a founding member please contact me on twitter "here" or through the contact form "here" just tell me who you are and that you are on board with us in the Cairo Creative Space, il do the rest! Great idea! - for those lucky enough to be living in Egypt right now :( But I suggest having a sliding scale of dues to allow those who can't afford it, to participate - to get a wider range of voices. Dues could be requested on a sliding scale, both below and above the suggested $100. You'd be surprised how many who can easily do it, will give more. Fawaz Rashed 07/07/2011 3:17am

Hey seems like a great idea but would you mind elaborating more on the concept ? wt will this hub activities be like ? Hussein El Said 07/07/2011 1:13pm
the members are the ones who organize and execute the activities and projects within themselves, the hub can only help but cant organize. 07/10/2011 12:20pm
hello Hussein, great, as for Heliopolis, it's already there to use, and please count us in as partners for a downtown space - and let's meet and see how we can work together! 07/10/2011 12:33pm
Hello Hussein, even though based in Dresden I follow closely the emerging changes in Egypt. Thanks to Ulrike and Frauke Godat, (@futureatschool) I know more about your initiative. Love to cocreate with ideas, and networks. Not sure whether this is applicable from distance. adel hazma 07/10/2011 5:17pm

I'm so in too. I'm not from Egypt, but I am visiting promoting hacker spaces in a month. I would love to interview some of you and show the rest of cairo that there are other hackers / makers who are interested in a building a hackerspace! Leave a Reply |
